Wells Cathedral

LL 3780

Information

Turner made several studies of Wells Cathedral when he visited it in 1795. There is a similar sketch to this watercolour in the collection of Tate Britain (no. XXVI 2). The sketch includes several ecclesiastical figures outside the doors of the cathedral. Turner replaced them in this finished version with a group playing cricket and hoop. The detailed drawing of the cathedral in this watercolour is indebted to Turner’s architectural training.
