Winchester

This is thought to be a view of Winchester looking from the south. No watercolour of Winchester by Cotman has ever been found and there is no record of Cotman ever visiting Winchester. In 1960, Francis W Hawcroft of Whitworth Art Gallery rejected an attribution to Cotman or one of his sons. In 2005 Tim Wilcox, Curator at the Manchester Art Gallery, suggested it could be by Samuel Prout (1783 - 1852) early in his career.
