The Word

WAG 1759

A group of uneducated Puritans are debating the correct interpretation of a passage in the Bible. Their expressions and mannerisms are deliberately caricatured to make them look ridiculous. The lurid colours Bundy uses here, particularly the green of the curtain, may in part reflect the fact that he was a self-taught artist, but they also evoke the simplicity of the Puritan world.
