Information

This is a study for a painting entitled 'Sudley' by Maurice Cockrill in the Walker Art Gallery collection. It was the one of two paintings (with 'The Walker Art Gallery') of the city’s art galleries commissioned from Cockrill in the 1970s by the ‘Friends’ organisation. The finished painting exemplified the hyper-realist style of the 1970s in which a camera was often used to achieve photographic effects. It shows the south side of Sudley House in Mossley Hill Road, Aigburth. Sudley was bequeathed to the City of Liverpool, together with its fine collection of 18th and 19th century English pictures, by Emma Holt. This is one of a large collection of studies that Cockrill donated to the Walker Art Gallery in 1975.
