Information

Small hardbound book with hand written title, "Wreck of the 'Holt Hill' on St Pauls Island". Lined notebook containing newspaper clippings from various UK publications relating to the wreck of the barque Holt Hill, W. Price & Co., and the survival story of the crew. Several articles relate to crew member James W. Rawney, of Birmingham. The Holt Hill, captained by George Sutherland, was wrecked on 13 November 1889 whilst en route from Rio de Janeiro to Calcutta. The surviving crew were shipwrecked for eight days on the island of St Paul, in the Indian Ocean, before being rescued by the barque Coorong and brought to Adelaide, Australia. Among the survivors of the wreck was Charles Herbert Lightoller (possibly top row, far right), then a young apprentice, who would go on to survive the sinking of the Titanic.
