Wycliffe, Near Rokeby
WAG 1096
Information
From the late 1790s Turner was engaged in numerous commissions for drawings that would be engraved for several series of topographical prints. He continued to make these until the market for them declined in the 1830s.
This is a view of Wycliffe Hall on the River Tees. It was intended for Longman’s 'History of Yorkshire'. Originally planned as a seven part work, the series was soon abandoned due to spiralling costs. Only one volume, 'The Parish of Richmondshire', was printed. It included this view.
