Christmas in hospital

This photograph from the Museum of Liverpool's social history collection was taken at Christmas time in the children's ward of Liverpool Stanley Hospital. The picture shows the Lord Mayor and nurses with some of the patients from the ward, including one child seated on a zebra mounted specimen. Nurse Alice Sephton is on the far left holding a child's hand.

Alice was born on 11 May, circa 1900. She worked as a Theatre Sister at the hospital and started her training on 1 July 1930. Alice worked in the Maud Dean Ward with surgeon 'Pip Flynn'. Before each operation they would all say a prayer. While she worked at the hospital she lived in Liverpool Stanley Hospital Nurses Home. Upon retirement she moved to Coronation Court, where she lived until her death in 1978. She never married.
