'Margate' by Turner, c1840

This is one of 33 watercolours, paintings and prints that will go on display in the exhibition Turner: Travels, light and landscape at the Lady Lever Art Gallery from 14 February to 1 June 2014.

The exhibition will explore Turner’s endeavours to challenge the widely-held assumption that historical painting was superior to landscape. It was in doing this that he produced some of the most thrilling, evocative paintings ever known.

All of the works in the exhibition belong to National Museums Liverpool and form one of the most outstanding Turner collections in the country. The delicate works on paper in the exhibition are hidden treasures of National Museums Liverpool’s collection which are rarely on public display due to their light-sensitivity.
