Willy Russell was born in Liverpool in 1947. He is a popular playwright, lyricist, and composer. Some of his best-known works include Educating Rita, Shirley Valentine, Blood Brothers and Our Day Out. Most of his plays are based upon strong Liverpool story lines and characters. Some of these are featured in the Writing Liverpool exhibition in the Museum of Liverpool's Wondrous Place gallery.
The artist, Peter Edwards, is a well-known portrait painter who has exhibited at the Royal Academy and The National Portrait Gallery.
This painting from the Museum of Liverpool's social history collection is not currently on display but you may have seen it at the former Museum of Liverpool Life. It was acquired by National Museums Liverpool in 1994.
