Cat, made in 1907 by Louis Riche

cat sculpture

This unusual sculpture was bought from the Liverpool Autumn Exhibition in 1907. Louis Riche (1877-1949) was born in France and was well known for his small scale animal subjects, particularly German shepherd dogs, which he considered to be his best work.

At only 27 cm high this elegant domestic cat is shown as if it is looking down at something from a great height. Perhaps it is carefully watching prey below or is simply resting out of danger's reach. Riche has skilfully captured the curvature of the cat's spine and its balanced posture.

This sculpture, which is not on display, is from the Walker Art Gallery's collection.
