Our striking-looking tabby cat looks very pleased with himself. His realistic stripes were painted using a special glaze. Although made of stoneware, a type of pottery, the glaze makes him seem very cat-like.
Charles Vyse made and decorated this unique cat. He worked with his wife Nell and they made a very successful team. They recreated the lost recipe for the glaze, called tenmoku, used by Chinese potters over one thousand years ago.
This model, which is not currently on display, is from the Decorative Art collection at the Walker Art Gallery.
