Seafaring red setters

Mate Cork Watson with two red setters, cargo for Japan, Eumaeus, Blue Funnel Line (Ocean Steam Ship Company) 1931 (PR/621, part of Maritime Archives and Library)

This photograph is part of a collection of images taken by seafarer James Stewart (1908-1989) and donated to the Maritime Archives and Library by his family.

Making a change from the usual profile image of a vessel, this collection includes lots of snaps of crew life. It looks like the mate is enjoying having the dogs onboard.

Like all Blue Funnel ships, Eumaeus is named after a figure from Greek mythology. Eumaeus features in the Odyssey and was swineherd to Odysseus.
