Hunting dogs

jug decorated with scenes of hunting dogs, both sides shown

This earthenware jug, which is not currently on display, is from the Decorative Art collection at the Walker Art Gallery.

Both sides are painted in enamel with hunting vignettes. One side shows five breeds of sporting dog, presented in poses typical of their breed character, in a dramatic rural landscape.

The other side features a gloriously autumnal image of a gun-carrying hunter, pheasant at his feet, attended by his three excited spaniels.

The foot-rim, lip and scroll handle are all gilded. The handle and rim are further decorated with foliate patterns, also in gold.
