'All You Need Is Love' bedspread

detail of hand stitched Yellow Submarine cartoon characters on bedspread

Detail from the bedspread

This is the bedspread from John Lennon and Yoko Ono's Montreal 'Bed-In For Peace' in room 1742 of the Queen Elizabeth Hotel, Montreal in May 1969. It's made from blue felt decorated with appliqué, embroidery, and drawing featuring the text 'All You Need Is Love' and characters from the Yellow Submarine animated film.

Hand stitched bedspread decorated with Yellow Submarine cartoon characters

The bedspread was made by Christine Kemp who designed it as a wall hanging for her studio a few weeks before the bed-in. Christine presented the piece to John and Yoko on the first day of the event in a spontaneous expression of friendship and solidarity.

Purchased for the Museum of Liverpool collection in 2005.

This bedspread is currently on display in the exhibition Double Fantasy - John & Yoko, on the second floor of the Museum of Liverpool.

Accession number MLL.2005.25.2
