Paintings in room 30
Paintings by leading artists of the early 19th century, including Turner, Constable and Etty.
The most significant paintings on display in room 30 are those by Turner and Constable, which hang either side of the fireplace.
There is also a large group of pictures by William Etty. Etty was famous, in his own time, for painting the female nude. Queen Victoria admired his pictures. His paintings of historical and classical scenes were inspired by the work of Titian and Rubens. Since Etty's death in 1849 his work had gone out of fashion, but Lever's interest in it helped to make it popular again.
The grand state portrait of Queen Victoria that hangs above the fireplace was painted by Sir David Wilkie. The young queen hated the picture but it now has pride of place in this room.
