Poster, 'Melly Supports the Miners'

About this object

George Melly returned to Liverpool to perform in support of the Miners' Strike at the Liverpool Empire Theatre in 1984.

Thousands of coal miners across the country had started industrial action earlier that year when the government announced their intention to close 20 coal mines, as well as the plan, in the long-term, to close over 70 pits.

People from across Merseyside showed solidarity and support for the miners by raising money and sending food and essentials to the struggling families. The strike finally ended on 3 March 1985, nearly a year after it had begun.
