Documented history

Currently the earliest documentation for the figure places it in Europe in the 20th century: Edna Dakeyne of London bought the cohoba stand at auction in Ireland in the mid-1930s, in an assorted lot for £5 from a parish sale. She recalled that the figure was sold with a 'skirt' covering its waist. It remained in her collection until 1955 when she sold it to Nelson Rockefeller, who lent it to New York's Museum of Primitive Art in 1956. In 1979 it was bequeathed by Nelson Rockefeller to the Metropolitan Museum of Art as part of the Michael C Rockefeller Memorial Collection.
