Documented history

The reliquary entered the collections of Francois Humbert (b. 1776, d. 1850), an internationally renowned French doctor, sometime during his life, and was donated to the Musée Barrois, Bar-le-Duc upon his death. Humbert travelled extensively in his early career – within France itself as well as a year stationed in Italy (Turin and Milan). Early Caribbean antiquities are known to have circulated in Italy shortly after Columbus’ voyages, and other examples may have made it into France, especially given their presence in Haiti and the Caribbean’s Lesser Antilles in the 17th and 18th centuries.
