Account and crew agreement for the ship Lagoon, a coastal cargo vessel of the British & African Steam Navigation Company (managed by Elder Dempster). It served the West Africa Coastal Service.
This particular voyage departed from Lagos, Nigeria, on 15 November 1907 and traded around the West African coast before arriving back in Liverpool on 28 May 1908.
Black seafarers were recruited from the West African coast to work in the engine room as they were thought to be better suited to the heat. They endured difficult conditions, were paid less, and led an invisible life below deck.
