Post-Impressionism and beyond

Post-Impressionism and beyond

Room 10

Inspired by the Impressionists these artists were less concerned with capturing accurate representations of the real world and explored expression through colour.

About the collection

A new wave of modern art developed in the late 19th century. Artists were inspired by the Impressionists (on display in Room 9) but also sought ways to move beyond their style. Post-Impressionism broadly refers to these artists, not any one particular style of art.

Many artists became more interested in representing the world around them. This was a departure from the academic art valued in places like France and Britain, which celebrated historical, religious and mythological scenes. The New English Art Club was founded in London in 1886 and offered an alternative to the Royal Academy. Walter Sickert (1860-1942) exhibited in their first exhibition and went on to become one of the most influential artists in Britain.

Some Post-Impressionist artists were less concerned with capturing accurate representations of the real world. Instead, they explored expression through colour.
