Preparing and packing a framed painting for transport

When works of art from the collection are prepared to go out on loan to exhibitions within the UK and abroad our conservators ensure each frame is robust enough to travel. We also work with paper and paintings conservators plus the handling and transport team to ensure the paintings and their frames are adequately protected for transit.

Paintings are transported in specially constructed containers that have been designed to a very high specification to stop any shock or vibrations passing through to the artwork whilst in transit. The containers are fitted out with thermal insulation layers and cushioning foams.
