Detail of decorative relief arches across the top of the painting

Detail of arcading across the top of 'St Michael and the Dragon'

The gilded, arcaded ornament has been attached to the surface of the main panel with metal pins which can be seen clearly in the x-ray. It is flush with the vertical edges and top of the panel and the design is almost symmetrical with the width of the panel as it currently stands.

We cannot tell for certain whether or not this was part of the original decoration as the panel has been regilded several times and the ornament probably removed each time.
