Paper conservation

Paper conservation is responsible for the conservation and preservation of a wide variety of objects ranging from archival material, books and photographs to prints drawings and watercolours. We look after items for all departments within National Museums Liverpool.

As well as general care of the collections a lot of our time is spent preparing objects for exhibition. This includes items required for our own displays as well as loans to other institutions.

Practical treatments range considerably from removing dirt and stains, acidic backings, degraded self adhesive tapes and rusty staples through to repairing tears and losses, consolidation and strengthening of paper supports.

We then provide storage solutions appropriate to the collections. This can involve making new supports, folders, envelopes, mounts and boxes.
