The National Conservation Centre hosted this exhibition showcasing Merseyside's contemporary artists as part of Liverpool's Capital of Culture celebrations in 2008.

The works on show were a selection of the best from the open exhibitions held throughout 2008 in the Merseyside boroughs of Wirral, Sefton, Knowsley, St Helens and Halton.

This exhibition was not all that Merseyside artists had to offer, but it gave a candid snapshot of the local art scene. It was the work made, seen and appreciated by thousands of visitors to Merseyside's 'other' galleries, outside Liverpool city centre.

Ten artists were chosen from each of the five borough exhibitions. The fifty artists represented reflected the variety of work being produced in the area. This included many semi-professional or talented amateur artists who were glad of the platform these open shows offer.

The sixth Merseyside borough, Liverpool, does not have an equivalent open exhibition. However there is a degree of overlap and movement between the areas meaning that Liverpool artists are often eligible to show in the other boroughs.

This exhibition was developed by galleries outside Liverpool (a grouping of the arts development and gallery officers from the five boroughs) and is supported by the Arts Council.
