A study of Brown's second daughter, by his second wife Emma. It was drawn in 1852 when she was one and a half years old. Another portrait of her is seen as the baby lying on her mother's lap in the painting 'Waiting' (Walker Art Gallery), begun in the previous year. Catherine is also seen as a young woman in The Nosegay, a watercolour in this exhibition.

Cathy became an artist. She married a music critic Franz Hueffer. Their eldest son became famous, after a change of surname, as the novelist Ford Madox Ford.
