Ten of the finest drawings by the Renaissance master, Leonardo da Vinci, are on show at Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight.

The drawings are on loan from the Royal Library, Windsor Castle, as part of the celebrations to mark the Golden Jubilee of Her Majesty The Queen. They have been specially selected to reflect all stages of Leonardo's career and the wide range of his interests.

Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) was the archetypal 'Renaissance man', accomplished in sculpture, architecture, music, anatomy, engineering, cartography, geology and botany. His drawings are the richest, most wide-ranging, technically brilliant and endlessly fascinating of any artist.

Leonardo maintained that an image transmitted knowledge more accurately and more concisely than words. His drawings reveal an intellectual fertility unmatched in the history of Western thought.

The extent of Leonardo's achievements was little known to his contemporaries and his notebooks were only published and transcribed in the late nineteenth century. In the last few decades, research has enabled his many hundreds of drawings to be understood properly.

The Royal Collection holds the world's most important group of Leonardo drawings, unrivalled in terms of its breadth and subject matter. The Lady Lever Art Gallery is the first venue on the tour, giving people in the North West an exceptional opportunity to view these masterpieces in one of the region's finest art galleries. The drawings are as follows:

  • Studies of a horse, c.1490
  • The drapery of a kneeling figure, c. 1491-94
  • A map of the Valdichiana c. 1503-04
  • Mortars bombarding a fortress, c.1503-04
  • Neptune, c.1504-05
  • A branch of blackberry, c.1505-07
  • Studies of optics and men in action, c.1508
  • The head of a youth in profile, c.1510
  • The anatomy of the shoulder, c.1510-11
  • A tempest, c.1510-15

The Golden Jubilee exhibition coincides with the 550th anniversary of the year of Leonardo's birth.
