The Liverpool Blitz

Stewart Bale collection online exhibition

This is the second in a series of online exhibitions dedicated to the Stewart Bale photographic collection to highlight the breadth of its subject matter.

This exhibition, featuring the World War II Liverpool Blitz and resulting war damage, shows the devastating effects that this had on the city and its inhabitants. Buildings such as the White Star Building and the Head Post Office sustained serious damage.

Lines of transport, such as the Liverpool Overhead Railway (LOR), were frequent targets and as the main line of the dock goods railway ran beneath it for most of its length, serious damage to the LOR created a negative knock on effect for the crucial traffic of goods via the dock system.

Two of the images show the effects of loss and disruption on a more personal scale with war damage to terraced housing and a school classroom.
