150th anniversary of HMS Conway

Temporary archive display

1 May to 30 September 2009

This display celebrated the 150th anniversary of the Merchant Navy training ship, HMS Conway, which opened on 1 August 1859. For more than 80 years the school ship was a familiar sight moored off Rock Ferry on the river Mersey and her memory lives on as part of Britain's and especially Merseyside's, maritime tradition.

Follow the links below to see some of the archive photographs from the display and find out about the history of HMS Conway.

The archives of HMS Conway are held at the Maritime Archives and Library. Further information is available on archive information sheet number 9. An online guide to HMS Conway objects in the maritime history collection, some of which were featured in the archive display, is also available on this website.
