Reflections on racism - 'riots' in Liverpool, 1919-1980s

University of Liverpool public lecture series

This year marks 100 years since the seaport riots of 1919. In Liverpool as in other port cities including London, Glasgow and Cardiff Black sailors were the targets of vicious racist attacks by white workers for allegedly 'taking jobs, houses and women', resulting in the fatality of Charles Wotton. Sixty years later Liverpool would again be the scene of unrest caused by the racist and violent policing of Liverpool's Black community.
