Funding boost for festival of contemporary art at Walker Art Gallery
National Museums Liverpool is part of a successful bid, driven by Liverpool LEP, for a funding award of £2.15 million from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
National Museums Liverpool will receive £76,693 to go towards Modern Masters, an exciting festival of contemporary art at the Walker Art Gallery.
Director of Art Galleries, Sandra Penketh said: “We’re thrilled be part of this project. With this support we will bring a series of fascinating exhibitions to a wider audience and continue to support Liverpool’s place on the cultural map.
“While Government cuts to our core budget have a major impact on the services we can offer, this funding is an important boost, enabling us to produce great exhibitions and encourage new visitors.”
Modern Masters is a series of three exhibitions, featuring two internationally-renowned artists:
• David Hockney: Early reflections (11 October 2013 - 16 March 2014) is a major show which looks at the early influences on the iconic British artist. With work spanning from 1960-78, the exhibition explores a period of experimentation and self-discovery. This exhibition is part of the Arts Council Collection Partnerships sponsored by Christie's programme.• The Vanity of Small Differences (May - August 2014) by Turner Prize-winning artist, Grayson Perry, is inspired by William Hogarth’s A Rake’s Progress. Six vivid, exuberant tapestries tell the story of class mobility and the influence social class has on our aesthetic taste.
• In summer 2014 the John Moores Painting Prize opens as part of the Liverpool Biennial. Dubbed "the Oscars of the painting world," this prestigious exhibition showcases current trends from the most exciting crop of contemporary UK-based painters.About National Museums Liverpool
