A framed, mounted print of a reproduction of Cat and Bush Peony (detail), Ishibashi Kazunori (1876-1928), drawing, ink and colour on paper.
A sleeping house cat and bush peonies in full bloom were depicted together in Chinese painting from at least the tenth century. Two plants here sit either side of the scholar’s ornamental rock. The sparrows on top of the rock are clearly delighted to be free of the cat’s attentions.
The print has been designed and made in the UK exclusively for National Museums Liverpool.
