Plan your trip

We welcome a huge number of group visits every year, including nursery, school and college groups, adult groups and tours and community groups. In order to make the most of your visit, please read the information for your group type below, and remember to pre-book your group visit with us.

Nursery, schools and college visits

Each year we welcome visitors at all key stages into our venues - early years, primary, secondary, further and higher education and SEN. There are a number of ways that you can visit our museums and galleries:

Due to the large numbers of groups that visit us each day, you must pre-book your visit with us.

General visits

If you are coming on a general visit, fill in a booking form to let us know the details. If we can accommodate you, we will send you a confirmation letter. Providing you do not need to book a lunch space or have any other requirements, we may not need to speak to you further. If there is an issue, we will contact you.

Museum-led workshops

If you want to book a particular educational activity, have a look through our workshops before you fill in a booking form with your preferences. There is a charge for most of our museum-led workshops.

These museum-led workshops are offered on most Monday to Fridays during term time, they are not available on weekends or during school holidays or half term. Where further date restrictions apply these are noted in the workshop details on our workshop pages. We cannot offer these at different times. Some sessions are in extreme demand and we cannot always accommodate groups at short notice. It is useful to have some alternative dates to hand just in case.

Self-led sessions

Some sessions are designed so the class teacher can lead the session, using resources that we provide online or in print (subject to availability). If you would like to use any of our printed resources you will need to book them in advance. We do not provide clipboards or pencils, so please remember to bring your own. Fill in a booking form to book your self-led visit and request resources.

Booking a group visit

You can contact the bookings team by using the booking form. You will receive a confirmation email within five working days. Please note that your booking is not confirmed until we have sent your confirmation email. If you do not receive one then please get back in touch.

If you are booking a trip very far in advance it may take a little longer to get back to you - please be patient while we process your request.

Some worksheets, trails and notes for teachers can be downloaded from this website from the topics, workshops and venue pages, and others can be requested when you book your visit.

Please note that we do not provide pencils or clipboards so please remember to bring your own on the day.

Lunch rooms

Many of our venues can offer lunch rooms. However, these must be pre-booked. Please enquire at the time of booking.

We want people living with autism to feel welcome when they visit us, and aim to make our museums and galleries autism-friendly. National Museums Liverpool has signed up to the Autism Charter, through Autism Together and the Connect to Autism scheme. Our autism-friendly visits page has information about our special quiet mornings as well as tips on the best times to visit.

Adult groups and tours

If you want to visit as part of an adult group or coach trip, please complete an adult group bookings form to book your group visit in advance so we know to expect you. Please let us know which museum or art gallery you would like to visit, on which date and time, and whether you have any specific requirements.

Some of our venues can pre-book lunch for large groups. Do let us know if you plan to eat at the venue and we will put you in touch with the appropriate dining area.

Smaller groups can pre-book tours of the Old Dock, and our Visitor Hosts run regular tours of our venues, by request (subject to availability). You can also view the what’s on guide on each venue's website (for example What's on at the Walker Art Gallery) for details of special tours and talks that are running as part of our public programme.

Please complete an adult and community group bookings form to book your visit.

Community groups

If you are a part of a community group and would like to make a general visit please complete an adult and community group bookings form to book your group in.

If you are interested in a particular subject then have a look at our workshops to see if there’s anything that would appeal to your group. We can often adapt our sessions to meet your particular needs.

Other enquiries

For any other enquiries please call the bookings team on 0151 478 4788, 8.30am-5pm, Monday-Friday.

Please note that we are a small team of people and we do experience very high numbers of phone calls at peak times, so we use a call filtering system to prioritise the most pressing requests. If you leave a message we will get back to you as soon as we can, usually within five working days.

Essential information and risk assessments

Whether you are coming on a general visit or taking part in a workshop, we strongly recommend that you download the following information sheets for comprehensive details about bringing a group to one of our venues, including the risk assessments.

These handy guides contain practical information to help teachers and group leaders prepare for a visit to each venue, including booking and running a visit, lunch rooms, safety information and sample risk assessments. It is a good idea for all the accompanying adults in your group to be well-briefed before the trip.

There are three different 'Getting to know your museum' information packs for the Museum of Liverpool, each one focussing on a different age group. The other venues just have one information sheet covering all age ranges.
