Liverpool - a history of a city

Discover the history of Liverpool from the time of the first Stone Age settlers to the present day with interactive games and handling objects. Explore the reasons why Liverpool became so wealthy and some of the characters that made it possible.

This session can be booked Monday to Friday at 10.15am, 11.30am and 1.15pm.

Workshop details

This session begins on the Museum’s timeline in the History Detectives gallery which provides a 38 metre overview of Liverpool history and includes more than 700 objects. Our timeline is investigated and objects of interest from Liverpool’s history including references to the Prehistoric Age, Romans, Vikings, Anglo Saxons and Liverpool Castle located. 

Pupils are then encouraged to become history detectives using objects from our handling collection from four different periods of Liverpool’s history; early settlers, becoming a city, the great port and modern Liverpool. The children are invited to use these clues to Liverpool’s past to discover what they tell them about the city at that time in history.

A unique film, '800 years in 60 seconds', which shows Liverpool’s transformation from fishing village to cosmopolitan city, is shown.
