Survival secrets: exploring animal adaptations

This workshop, which is suitable for all ages, will introduce a variety of animals housed at World Museum from both our Aquarium and Bug House galleries.

This workshop is available to book on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

 

Workshop details

This workshop covers the biology and adaptations of a wide range of animals that live in the museum’s Aquarium and Bug House collection. 

One of our animal care experts will introduce you to our collection and explain what it takes to keep our animals happy and healthy. We will also highlight the importance of their natural environments and how vital it is to protect their habitats in the wild. 

Visitors will get to see live animals face to face as well as detailed close ups of their unique anatomy. They will also get the chance to study objects related to the animals and take part in some interactive games and activities to help reinforce what they have learned in the session.

Practical information for your visit 

To help your pupils gain the most from their session and ensure safe handling of the collections, it is essential that you have a ratio of at least 1 adult helper to 8 pupils. 

Please arrive on time for your show or we may not be able to run it for you. Please share these notes with your adult helpers before your visit. This will help them to support your pupils have a successful and enjoyable day.

Curriculum links 

English speaking and listening 

  • Students will be encouraged to participate in discussion, taking turns, and listening to what others say. 

  • There will be an opportunity to discuss and clarify the meanings of words, linking new meanings to known vocabulary. 

  • Students will have an opportunity to ask and answer questions. 

Science 

  • Develop an understanding of methods of scientific enquiry so that pupils learn to use a variety of approaches to answer relevant scientific questions.  

Learning outcomes 

Knowledge and understanding 

Pupils will: 

  • Develop a chronologically secure knowledge and understanding of the natural world. 

  • Delve into different types of animals and look at how the animal kingdom can be divided into two groups, invertebrates and vertebrates. 

  • Understand the importance of looking after animals and protecting the natural world for future generations. 

  • Look at different characteristics of animals and how they help them survive and live in the wild. 

Explore what the difference between herbivore, omnivore, carnivore and discuss food chains within the session. 

Skills 

Pupils will: 

  • Have the opportunity to draw on and share their existing knowledge whilst also being encouraged to absorb and recall new information assimilated throughout the session. 

  • Gain practice in working through an activity collaboratively and with consideration for their peers. 

  • Improve their speaking and listening skills. 

  • Improve their confidence by individual participation in dramatic sections of the presentation. 

Concepts 

Pupils will: 

  • Appreciate that objects and animals displayed and worked with in the museum are to be treated with respect. 

  • Understand how our knowledge of the past and present is constructed from a range of sources. 

Attitudes 

Pupils will: 

  • Be confident in interpreting information different types of animals  

  • Have had opportunity to work collaboratively with peers. 

  • See the World Museum as an enjoyable and stimulating place to visit.
