When the Lady Lever Art Gallery opened its new South End galleries last month, after a £2.8m major redevelopment project, guests at the private preview were wowed by the bespoke catering by our Conference and Events team, because the menu was rather special.
The Lady Lever Art Gallery has one of the most beautiful collections of fine and decorative art in the UK, including lots of world famous Pre-Raphaelite artworks and Chinese ceramics. And did you know the gallery has the best collection of Wedgwood Jasperware in the world?
Our Conference and Events team wanted to show off our collections and venue through the catering. So guests were delighted by sable biscuits with a short pastry disk replicating the cameo design from Wedgwood pottery.
Other menu items at the re-opening included king prawn with a soy and chilli dressing, in celebration of the Chinese porcelain collection, one of the finest in Europe. A delicacy of foie gras and ham hock terrine en croute, with Sauternes gelee and a course of Reblochon were inspired by the French-themed ‘Napoleonic’ room. Finally, to round off the occasion, a rose water jelly was served – a popular 18th century dessert - in tribute to the outstanding paintings, furniture and sculpture of the era.
Katie Roberts, Head of Events at National Museums Liverpool said: “The new South End galleries have recently been returned to their original architectural glory, from when the Gallery first opened in 1922. They are an inspiration and for the re-opening event in this spectacular space, we wanted to do something very special.
“We thought about the gallery’s unique collections, as well as the date and architecture of the building, to deliver something tailored that would surprise and delight the guests. I am proud of the whole team for their creativity, efficiency and dedication.”
The new galleries have an array of beautiful period features, from elaborate plasterwork architraves and skirting cast from the original designs, to parquet flooring throughout. The scheme has been funded through donations, corporate sponsorship and major grants, including a generous grant of £1.4m from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The Lady Lever art gallery is an elegant setting and can hold drinks receptions for up to 400 guests and private dining for up to 150 guests. Situated in the picture perfect Port Sunlight village the gallery provides a stunning backdrop for any event.
