I’ve been talking about our exciting project to restore and redevelop the South End galleries
at the Lady Lever for quite a few months now and have been itching to get on site to see how the work is progressing.
Last week my moment came to don a high vis jacket, a hard hat and some sturdy boots and step behind the hoardings to discover what the South End galleries
look like at the moment.
I was joined Director of Art Galleries, Sandra Penketh and Estate Manager, Chris Bailey on the building site, who were able to show me around.

A hidden door revealed
Sandra and Chris told me that they had made a startling discovery when moving a fireplace and removing a wall in the large Wedgwood room.
Removing the wall had revealed a hidden door that they believed had been locked for around 100 years!

Peeling back the layers of this building will continue to uncover new stories for us to tell so watch this space for our next blog.
Until then I’ll leave you with a photo of the scaffold required to repair the glass roof lights – imagine if your window cleaner had to build something like this every month!
A lot of scaffolding in the South End dome!
