Textile hangings created by Alderwood Day Centre service users, for an art course at St Helens College
Sudley House has long been a venue for peaceful thought and tranquillity. Over the years a wide variety of groups, including Church and Mossley Hill Childrens Centre, Liverpool City Council Adult Learning Service and Mersey Care NHS Trust (you can see their latest project here) have utilised the facilities to explore ideas and produce work inspired by the pleasant surroundings that the house has to offer.
Service-users from Alderwood Day Centre in Liverpool have been using the Learning Suite recently as a base whilst they complete pieces for their Open Award Level 1 Creative Design course at St Helens College. As part of the course, the students proposed a small display of the works they had created. They planned the display themselves; creating a rota of responsibilities and taking into account any health and safety or risk assessment issues that may have arisen. Jayne Snape, course tutor from St Helens College, said:
“The idea of an exhibition came from two of our course units; the group suggested an art exhibit so they could show off their work to other people. They really enjoy the sessions at the house, and wanted the work to be on display for all to see”.
The group used patterns and colours found around Sudley House, the mosaics, tiles and wallpapers for example. Photographs formed the basis of the pieces, which were then developed into small abstract paintings. Using photo manipulation software, the students also produced brightly coloured images as well. One member of the group mentioned:
“I love coming to Sudley house everyone is so nice and I love the work we do and I think other people will like it here too”
The display can be seen in the Learning Suite until Tuesday 20 May 2014.
From a staff point of view, having groups such as these use Sudley House on a regular basis is a wonderful thing. Seeing service-users from a variety of backgrounds and with a range of needs build confidence and develop life-skills, shows the benefit of having a facility like Sudley House. Its friendly atmosphere and quiet areas, both inside and out, seem to be the perfect antidote to the bustling city centre.
