Joseph Mallord William Turner, 1798 - 1799 probably

LL 3778

About this object

Turner is known to have visited Hafod, the home of Thomas Johnes (1748 - 1816), in 1796. The estate in Aberystwyth was known for its landscaped grounds which included a druid’s temple and waterfall.

This watercolour focuses on the main house in great architectural detail. Ruled lines made in pencil are visible through the thin wash of watercolour along the roof of the house. This attention to detail reflects Turner’s early architectural training.
