Edward Lear, 1864-12-10

WAG 8175

About this object

In a diary entry written on the day this sketch was made, Lear commented that it was 'not a very satisfactory day - life unavoidably dull.' He went on to describe how the weather was 'fine, but gray, a very cold morning.' He also observed that the 'abundant' sloes and palms were 'not drawable' and Bordighera 'invisible' due to the 'cold, gray sky'. Lear first visited the Italian Riviera in 1864, he returned there again in 1868.
