S B Mrs Dibdin

Relation of Edward Rimbault Dibdin second curator of the Walker Art Gallery (1853 - 1941)

Mrs S B Dibdin was a relation of Edward Rimbault Dibdin (1853 - 1941) who was born in Endinburgh, Scotland. Dibdin entered a Lawyer's office and from 1877 he worked at an insurance office in Liverpool.

Dibdin was closely associated with art circles in both Edinburgh and Liverpool and became President of the Liverpool Artists' Club and Dickens Fellowship. He worked as an Art Critic for the newspaper 'Liverpool Courier' between 1887 and 1904. He was the second Curator of the Walker Art Gallery between 1902 and 1918 and was also appointed President of the Museums Association between 1914 and 1918. Edward Dibdin was mainly concerned with promoting Liverpool Artists. His publications included a 'Biographical Account of Charles Dibdin', 1909 and 'Liverpool Art and Artists in the Eighteeth Century' Walpole Society Journal, 1918.

There are two of his portraits in the Walker Art Gallery collection by Frank Thomas Copnall (1870 - 1949) and William Barnes Boadle (1840 - 1916), the latter was presented to the Walker Art Gallery by Mrs S B Dibdin after his death in 1942.
