Thomas Clarke

British art collector (1834 - 1911) and previous owner of Allerton Hall in Liverpool

According to the Peerage, Thomas Clarke was the son of William Clarke and his wide Elizabeth McCarthy. He was married to Elizabeth Ruddell, daughter of William Ruddell and had eight children. He was a former owner of Allerton Hall, a manor also owned by the much celebrated William Roscoe of Liverpool.

Clarke purchased Allerton Hall and its surroundings in 1886. His wife and children presented Allerton Hall to the city of Liverpool in 1926. The family name survives in the surrounding public park known as Clarke Gardens. Thomas Clarke was thought to be a collector of art, especially English watercolours. Some of his collection was sold at Christie's 29 January 1926 (lot 104).
