Charles James Appleby (1828 - 1906) and his elder brother, Thomas Hodgson Appleby (dates unrecorded), began trading as 'Appleby Brothers' in London in 1862. They specialised in the manufacture of steam cranes, dredgers, brick making machinery, steam crabs, pile drivers, pumps, portable and stationary engines.
