Dr John Percy

Metallurgist and art collector (1817–1889)

Percy was an important mettallurgist who developed a means of extracting silver from its ores. He was also an amateur artist and collected fine art watercolours and prints. He amassed an important collection of art. It was sold after his death at Christie's in April 1890. A manuscript catalogue of his watercolour drawings was bought by the British Museum.

He was probably the previous owner of 'Near Arundel, Sussex' (WAG 704) by Anthony Vandyke Copley Fielding (1781 - 1855) and definitely a previous owner of 'A Wayside Inn' ( WAG 1006) by John Varlery (1778 - 1842). Both are now in the collection of the Walker Art Gallery.
