Violet Hunt was the eldest daughter of the well-known landscape painter Alfred William Hunt (1830 - 1896) and novelist Margaret Raine Hunt (1831–1912). She studied at Notting Hill and Ealing high school and and later at Kensington Art School.

Miss Hunt wrote short stories, seventeen novels, a memoir of her Edwardian years, and a biography of Elizabeth Siddal, wife of Pre-Raphaelite artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828 - 1882).
