September 2019 marks the 250th anniversary of the Shakespeare Jubilee in Stratford-upon-Avon. This event, organised by the actor David Garrick, was the first event to suggest that Shakespeare was (and is) England’s national poet, and established Stratford as a place of literary pilgrimage.

This talk on William Hogarth’s painting of Garrick as Richard III will explore Shakespeare’s place in visual arts and how Shakespearean images have sustained national identity.
