About this object

Born in Hamburg, Germany, Karl Lagerfeld moved to Paris in 1952. He began his career working for the French couturiers Pierre Balmain and Jean Patou and the Italian fashion house, Fendi.

Between 1965 and 1983, Lagerfeld was head designer at the French couture house Chloe, before moving to Chanel. In 1984 he launched his own label, Karl Lagerfeld, and his ready-to-wear line, KL. Today, he designs for three labels, Chanel, Fendi and his own line.

Influenced by the ‘power suit’ of the 1980s, this suit is typical of Lagerfeld’s work for his own diffusion label, KL.

The designer had a long-term relationship with Jacques de Bascher, from the early 1970s until the latter’s death in 1989.
