Winner of the John Moores Painting Prize 2018, Jacqui Hallum showcases her most recent work at the Walker Art Gallery. In addition to the £25,000 prize money, in celebration of the Prize’s 60th anniversary, Hallum was also awarded a three-month Fellowship at Liverpool School of Art & Design. This solo display at the Walker, which was also a part of the first prize, reveals how her studio residency, hosted by Liverpool School of Art and Design, has enabled the development of her work towards the creation of this exhibition.
Based in Totnes, Devon, Hallum attended Coventry School of Art and Design and the Slade. She is interested in the possibilities of the painted object. Her works are subject to change and decay and her imagery is sourced from medieval woodcuts, leaded glass windows, Art Nouveau children’s book illustrations, tarot cards, Berber carpets and still life flower studies. Hallum has been living and working in Liverpool this year and her time in the city has inspired this recent body of work.
