Circular profile portrait of Romney

The Romney Society is based in Kendal where George Romney established his first studio in 1757. The primary purpose of the society is to explore the art of the 18th century with particular reference to the life and times of George Romney and his contemporaries.

The programme for members includes three of four lectures a year, trips to galleries and historic houses, together with several social events.

The society publishes 'Transactions', an annual volume of original essays and transcripts of its lectures. It also sends out a newsletter three times a year with information about forthcoming events. Both of these are free to members.

The society has established a bursary fund for full time students to encourage the study of Romney and his contemporaries.

Annual subscription to The Romney Society is 7.50 or 15 overseas rate.
