'The Annunciation'

A woman in a garden looks up at an angel above her

Watercolour on paper, painted in 1855 and retouched in 1858, 35.6 x 24.1cm, Private collection

This is an unusual, outdoor representation of the Annunciation. As Mary is washing clothes in a stream, she is startled by the appearance of the Angel Gabriel in the trees, his wings folded in front of him.

White lilies, traditionally shown at the Annunciation to symbolize the purity of the Virgin Mary, are growing in the stream with purple irises.
