Emily Tinne loved buying hats, especially if she could get a bargain in a sale. There are over 100 hats in the collection but Emily once owned even more. She particularly liked black hats trimmed with feathers, natural straw hats and close-fitting cloche hats.

Emily shopped for hats at all the best-known Liverpool shops; Cripps' in Bold Street, the Bon Marché and Madame Val Smith's in Church Street, George Henry Lee's in Basnett Street and Owen Owen's in Clayton Square.
